Uber is getting serious about robotaxis 🚕
The company recently announced plans to invest more than $10B into robotaxis, while also cutting around 3,300 jobs (~10% of its workforce) to become more efficient.
Uber is trying to free up resources and move faster as competition from Waymo, Tesla and other autonomous driving players gets stronger.
Short term, the spending can hurt profits.
Long term, robotaxis could become one of the biggest parts of the Uber story. 📈
A great example of how Uber will lead the world forward in AVs through strategic partnerships and Chinese efficiency!

Good enough - my Uber thoughts
Not sure what the fuss is about tbh - bullish as ever about this stock.
I think the disruption fears are greatly exaggerated especially out of the US, and if you are even a touch more optimistic than consensus about the disruption risk, then this is easily a strong buy. Part of my background involves online operations at a FTSE 100 supermarket, so I figure it might be a fun exercise to go through my thoughts on this as someone who has seen the bills for running an online fleet.
As someone that frequently uses uber instead of owning a car, I’d suggest that the economics of both owning a used car or depreciating an exceptionally expensive vehicle are both often suboptimal. While getting a non-autonomous uber costs a driver’s pay, it also saves a fortune on repairs, maintenance and depreciation, which are paid for by the driver.
For science, I figure I’d compare the costs of a current uber driver with an autonomous electric car, assuming you were going to be a hypothetical robotaxi company.
My experience with uber in the UK is that the base cost excl surge pricing is approximately £3+£1 per mile. I’d estimate that the average taxi trip is approx 5 miles, so come up with a figure of £1.60 per mile as it stands (£8 fare).
It seems reasonable to assume that an average of 2.5 trips an hour (£20/hr) is collected in gross bookings, Uber’s mobility revenue (7.36bn) to gross bookings (28.99bn) of 25.4%, meaning the driver is collecting about £15 and uber is collecting about £5. £15 over 12.5 miles is a cost of £1.20/mi.
To be generous to our fleet of robotaxis, I will be making the assumption that that utilisation is a non-issue as fleets will easily complete their lifetime mileage before being decommissioned on that basis for scrap.
I’ll be generous and suggest that a fully autonomous EV might have a lifespan around 200,000 miles, and costs £42,000 today (very optimistic for a waymo which is more than double that, and is the equivalent of a new Tesla model Y). 21p a mile there.
With about 30% miles wasted getting to the passenger (a very generous assumption by heuristic optimisation standards, and incredibly unlikely to be achieved without a platform partner such as uber), you would save an opportunity cost of 140k miles = £168k.
Over 200k miles, my commercial experience dealing with large fleets would suggest 25p per mile seems reasonable for maintenance to account for far greater wear and tear in vehicles that are not self-owned by the driver/passenger (£50k) and 5p for electricity (£10k), depreciation to scrap (£42k), 10p per mile seems reasonable for insurance (£20k), a provision for 10p per mile (50p a trip, £20k lifetime) for things like enhanced cybersecurity, constant remapping and connectivity, your cost of revenue would be £142k, leaving a saving of just £26k over 200k miles of vehicle life.
Does it save money relatively speaking? Sure. Is it a lot? Depends on your perspective, it’s 13p a mile in this example. But I’d say the main assumption here is 30% wasted miles, which is insanely generous. For a 5 mile drive, that assumes just over 2 miles in getting to the passenger on average and driving back to a spot where you can either park temporarily or is a hot zone for other passengers. Is utilisation guaranteed to be a non-factor? Well maybe, certainly not in the early stages, but probably for later stage - after all, uber drivers come and go, but these evs are “assumed” to more or less be 24/7, except demand is highly uneven.
Not only that, but the pilots for AV keep happening in wealthy cities with relatively high driver cost, wider roads, better surfaces and exist in a closed navigational space (well mapped out zone), where any minute detail in the operating conditions is closely monitored. I believe this would further eat into £26k as these are not factored into the above modelling. Much of the world sure isn’t paying £15 an hour to their drivers!
As many large scale operators would say, the operator’s moat is in optimising the %’s on a huge gross bookings or revenue base - and this is exactly Uber’s moat. They manage to attract the huge user base, which means they are able to have better utilisation and less wasted miles, which is the whole game that uber seeks to play.

What do we think before earnings ?
I’ve been buying uber for over a year now , still a decent bit down but been DCA.
Very bullish , but do we wait till after earnings to get in more.
I really believe in uber long term - Waymo and Tesla are years away from eating into market share and developing economies where uber is entering and dominating aren’t getting AVs anytime soon .
On May 29, Paul Pelosi disclosed 200 call options on Uber with a $50 strike price, expiring March 19, 2027. That's exposure to 20,000 shares. Uber trades around $70 right now so the position is already $20 in the money.
Whether you think the Pelosis have "information advantages" or not is up to you. But the business case stands completely on its own.

Over 30 AV partners currently on the platform including Waymo, Rivian, Zoox, Waabi, Wayve, Pony.ai and WeRide. Autonomous trips grew 10x YoY in Q1. Target is AV services in 15 cities by end of 2026. Uber One membership hit 50 million subscribers.
Whatever company wins the self-driving race still needs 199 million customers and UBER has them!
Why the Pelosi trade makes sense 💡
$50 strike at a $70 stock price means the position needs Uber to fall 28% before it starts losing money. That's a very comfortable margin for a bet that expires in March 2027.
Pelosi's pattern has historically been deep in the money calls on large cap tech, followed by exercising into shares. He did it with Nvidia, Amazon and Alphabet before meaningful moves in each.
This one looks the same.

Have used a zero fee competitor. Trading 212 beats them for speed of deposits and withdrawals. They also charge a lower fee for currency conversions.
Transfer in of a cash ISA was efficiently handled.
Make sure you use instant bank transfers, rather than cards or ApplePay for deposits. Cards work fine until you exceed a lifetime total deposit of £2000 (after which they have a 0.7% fee).

I have been very pleasantly surprised at the good selection of ETF’s and company shares available on this platform. Armed with a little information gleaned from you tube videos I found the site simple to navigate and the purchasing tools very easy and intuitive.
