CNQ is still a massive oil cash-flow machine

CNQ now has 26 consecutive years of dividend growth, with a 20% dividend CAGR over that period. Headline numbers looked mixed: Revenue was C$12.4B vs C$12.7B last year. Net earnings fell to C$1.35B vs C$2.46B last year. But adjusted net earnings were basically flat at C$2.45B, and adjusted funds flow was still strong at C$4.37B. CNQ produced about 1.64M BOE/d, up around 4% YoY. More production means more cash-flow potential, as long as pricing and costs stay reasonable. Netbacks were also solid. Netback basically shows how much cash profit they keep per barrel after direct costs. North America liquids netback improved to C$42.31/bbl from C$39.80/bbl last year.Oil Sands Mining & Upgrading netback improved to C$48.15/bbl from C$46.60/bbl. That is a good sign. It means the per-barrel economics are still strong. CNQ raised the quarterly dividend by 6% to C$0.625/share, or C$2.50 annualized. They also continued buybacks, purchasing 5.4M shares in Q1 for about C$311M, plus more after quarter-end. Net debt is around C$16B, with the next target at C$13B. Once they reach that level, management plans to increase shareholder returns to 100% of free cash flow. CNQ keeps converting long-life oil reserves into cash and returning a large part of it through dividends and buybacks. It is not really a fast growth story, but more of a durable oil cash-flow compounder built on scale, strong netbacks, balance sheet discipline, and a dividend record that has survived many oil cycles.
